The Inn at Swifts Bay is located at the red square

Rule #1 on Lopez Island: Don't forget to wave!
What brings people to Lopez Island?
For us in 1996, it was a chance to participate in an exciting
business venture that would allow each of us to contribute our talents and make a positive
impact on other people's lives. The Inn at Swifts Bay was already considered a
successful business, so our goal has been to continue the traditions that have helped make
happy, satisfied guests; and find new ways to genuinely delight them! The Inn - for
us - is truly an investment in family, in a way of life, and in our island community ...
one where neighbors look after each other and come together for community events or to
help someone in need. A community of artists and thinkers, full of "urban
refugees" just like ourselves. |
| We were also drawn by the sheer natural beauty of
the San Juan Islands. What's not to love?! The majesty of Mount Baker
looming to the north and the Olympic Mountain Range to the south. The pristine
beauty of Puget Sound, where it's common to enjoy life among blue herons, otters, American
bald eagles and, of course, the Orca whales frolicking in the icy waters of the Puget
Sound. All this natural beauty, and yet within easy driving distance of two major
metropolitan areas: Seattle and Vancouver. What a magical combination! This magic still draws people to Lopez Island and the other San Juan
Islands. Some come to bike the country roads, kayak and boat the crystal clear waters, eat
at one of our renowned restaurants, or just kick back alone or with friends and family.
Yes, the Island can be hard to get to; and yes, you may find a
wait for the ferry, but the payoff really is extraordinary. You'll see when you get
here! By the way, if you'd like more information about Lopez Island as well as the
rest of the San Juan's, be sure to visit Your
Guide to the San Juan Islands, an online directory of things to do, places to go,
people to see, and attractions to enjoy during your visit to our pastoral island getaway! |

Welcome to Lopez Island!
Lopez Island is the first ferry stop from Anacortes. The
Washington State Ferry is the most popular way to get to Lopez, with an approximate
sailing time of 45 minutes. Look forward to a scenic and comfortable ride past nearby
islands.
Another way to get here is by air, with an unforgettable
panoramic view of the San Juan Islands archipelago. Daily scheduled air service is
available from Sea-Tac, Anacortes, Bellingham, and the nearby islands, as well as float
plane service from Lake Union in downtown Seattle.
Boaters coming to Lopez can find moorage in beautiful Fisherman
Bay, within walking distance of Lopez Village. The marina has modern restrooms, showers,
nearby bicycle and kayak rentals, a barbecue pit, and picnic area for visitors.
When planning a trip to Lopez during the summer months, it is
important to reserve rooms, restaurants, and campgrounds well in advance. Dress casually,
and expect warm weather in the summer; cool and wet in the winter. During the spring and
fall it could be warm, cool, wet, dry, or somewhere in between.
What is Lopez like?
First of all, it is the friendliest of the islands, with a
special pastoral charm. There's a genuine spirit of community and a special feeling about
living here which is shared by the 1,800 residents.
All Lopezians ask in return for sharing with you their beautiful,
ecologically fragile island is ... respect. Please recycle and don't litter.
Keep your pets on a leash. Bicycle riders must observe all safety rules, and keep to the
edge of the narrow, winding roads. Be courteous, and don't trespass on private
property.
What is there to do on Lopez?
A peaceful stroll along the beaches and trails at the state and
county parks will reward you with a chance to see wildlife in a natural, unspoiled
environment. Bring your binoculars! You can enjoy fishing, sailing, kayaking, and
cruising on the local waters.
Do you consider yourself to be a wine connoisseur? If so,
then a visit to Lopez Island Winery is an absolute "must-do"! You'll find
a wonderful array of wines that rival the best of California or Europe!
You will want to spend some time exploring Lopez Village.
It's where you can find "life's essentials", such as the post office, bank,
pharmacy, library, and medical clinic. Village Park is located in the center, where
the Chamber of Commerce provides a public picnic area, with restrooms, showers, and
telephones.
Lopez Village boasts several art galleries, restaurants, shops, a
bakery, espresso stands, and a fully-stocked grocery store. Shop for a variety of
superior-quality local products such as jam, herb vinegar, sauces, ice cream, and wines
produced by small cottage industries, as well as many hand-made arts and crafts. |
